Minimally Invasive & Robotic Surgery

If you need a surgery, you can rely on surgeons at Baystate Health for the latest techniques—including minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

ROBOTIC SURGERY AT BAYSTATE HEALTH

During robotic surgery, or robot-assisted surgery, your surgeon controls special robotic arms to complete the procedure.

The robotic arm can move in ways that a human hand cannot. It lets your surgeon reach very small areas with only minimal incisions, or cuts. The robot helps your surgeon do very precise, complex procedures.

The most well-known surgical robot is the da Vinci. The da Vinci Surgical System is the only surgical robot considered safe and effective by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Baystate Medical Center has two da Vinci robots.

THE BENEFITS OF MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY

Robotic surgery allows for what’s called minimally invasive surgery, or laparoscopic surgery. Minimally invasive surgery means your surgeon can make very small incisions compared to regular “open” surgery.

For example, certain heart surgeries can be done without opening up the patient’s chest. Using robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery, surgeons make incisions that are only a few inches long. Then, the robot arm is inserted through the incision to reach the heart.

Benefits of minimally invasive surgery include:

  • Smaller scars
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less bleeding, which means fewer blood transfusions
  • Less pain
  • Faster healing
  • Shorter stays at the hospital
  • Quicker recovery
  • Fewer complications
