Dr. Ya Zhou

Excellence in Medical Student Education

Dr. Ya Zhou, third year surgical resident, received the UMass Medical School “2020 Resident/Fellow Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education.”

The award recognizes a resident or fellow who is especially motivated and inspired to teach medical students, serves them as a mentor or role model, or improves the educational content of student rotations and clerkships.

As a very active member of the PURCH Resident Educators Program, Dr. Zhou observes MS 2 students in the Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health track during their hospital session interviews, and provides teaching and feedback on their history, physical exam, and oral presentation skills.

In her nomination of Dr. Zhou, Raquel Belforti, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director, PURCH Curriculum, UMMS-Baystate, cited one medical student’s testimonial.

“(Dr. Zhou) would often go out of her way to talk to students and include us in patient care. When I had the opportunity to work directly with her, she was an incredible teacher and made me feel like an integral part of the team.”
