Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship

Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Fellowship at UMass Chan Baystate

Our mission is to train MFM physicians skilled in the full spectrum of maternal and fetal care, including management of complicated maternal medical and surgical conditions, genetic counseling and screening, advanced ultrasound, and the full spectrum of intrapartum care.

We aim to foster life-long learning skills that will ensure evidence-based care for the entirety of the fellows future career. The program values and supports individualized education and mentoring, fellow and faculty wellness, and work-life balance in a collegial and respectful environment that values diversity and cultural understanding and care of patients. The mission of the program aligns with the mission of Baystate Medical Center, our sponsoring institution: "...to improve the health of the people in our communities every day, with quality and compassion."

Program-at-a-Glance

Baystate Medical Center, the flagship hospital of Baystate Health, is a 716-bed independent academic medical center and teaching site of UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate. It providers primary through quaternary care to the Western region of Massachusetts, serving a diverse population through rural and urban areas of the Commonwealth.

Baystate Medical Center is co-located with Baystate Children's Hospital, the only regional children's hospital and supports a Level 3 NICU, Level 4 Maternal Care Center, and Level 1 Trauma Center.

It is also the main site for the UMass Chan Medical School Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health (PURCH) track, hosting 25 medical students as the primary clinical site. Baystate Medical Center is also a clinical site for non-PURCH track medical students matriculated in the UMass Chan Medical School. Graduate medical education at UMass Chan-Baystate includes 11 ACGME approved residencies, over 30 fellowships, and supports approximately 360 residents and fellows, including a long-standing program in Obstetrics and Gynecology with 6 residents per year.

Over 4,200 deliveries occur at Baystate Medical Center yearly, supporting low-risk births in midwifery run practices through maternity care for critically ill patients, with 24/7 on-call Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) sub-specialists. It is a referral center for complex maternal and fetal conditions for the region, with 4 full-time MFM faculty and 2 full-time Women's Health NPs specialized in complex maternal care.

Outpatient MFM care is provided in an on-site office, where patients may be seen for consultation or full-scope prenatal care. The Perinatal Diagnostic Center is located in this office, with 6 on-site ultrasound rooms. Over 15,000 obstetric ultrasounds are performed yearly, with an on-site MFM interpreting all scans and counseling for patients, providing a large volume for extensive learning opportunities. The MFM faculty also supervise a resident High Risk Clinic which includes patients with various different medical conditions. Additionally, there is a Maternal Opioid Use Disorder Clinic staffed by faculty boarded in both OB/GYN and Addiction Medicine, allowing for increased opportunity to learn to manage this disease during pregnancy.
