As the only campus of Massachusetts’ only public medical school, you’ll benefit from the expertise, sophisticated technology, and national reputation of Baystate Health — one of the largest health systems in New England.
Last year, 379 residents and fellows trained in our graduate medical education programs, and 338 medical students completed clerkships and electives here. Come to UMass Chan - Baystate for the education and expertise you need to become an expert, compassionate caregiver.
Baystate Health is a not-for-profit, integrated health care system serving more than 850,000 people.
Learn About Our Academic MissionThe Clinical Experience You Need
You'll have countless opportunities to gain clinical experience in a range of areas. As a large tertiary medical center, we serve more than 850,000 people— in a largely under-served population that covers both the inner city and rural areas of western Massachusetts. And our clinical research program gives our patients — and you — access to advanced and comprehensive treatment options.
You’ll take advantage of the entire Baystate Health integrated health system as a training platform, including:
- Baystate Medical Center, a full-service teaching hospital
- Baystate Children’s Hospital, the region’s only accredited, full-service children’s hospital
- A Level 1 Trauma Center
- Three community hospitals and three urban health centers
- An ACS-accredited simulation center and surgical skills lab
- A large network of primary care and specialty services
A Supportive Campus Community
From Andrew Artenstein, MD, our regional executive dean, to our more than 600 faculty, we are experienced, approachable teaching clinicians, passionate about our subjects and passing on that knowledge to our students.
The moment you set foot on campus, you’ll begin to experience how our collaborative, team-based environment supports your development as a physician — and as a lifelong learner.
Focus on Community Health Through PURCH
PURCH (Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health) is a specialized community-centered program for medical students focused on health equity and population health. We launched PURCH in 2017 to understand the complex and common social and environmental factors affecting the health of western Massachusetts' urban and rural populations.
PURCH graduates stand out from the crowd of residency applicants. They've been 100% successful in the NRMP Residency Match, and many match to their first choice.
