Mercy Medical Center Announces Integration with Baystate Health
Baystate Health and Trinity Health Of New England signed a Definitive Agreement to fully transition Mercy Medical Center, its joint venture affiliates, and medical group entities in Massachusetts to Baystate Health. This agreement, subject to regulatory review and approval, marks an important step toward preserving and strengthening local access to high-quality, mission-driven care.
Healthcare access remains a challenge in western Massachusetts, and this integration aims to bring stability to the region. After regulatory approval and legal transfer of control, Baystate Health will assume governance and operational oversight of Mercy Medical Center to ensure sustainable, high-quality care remains local.
Mercy Medical Center will continue its nonprofit mission, community commitment and legacy of high-quality care. Both organizations are dedicated to a smooth transition for colleagues, patients and partners alike. Until the transition is complete and receives all regulatory approvals, Mercy Medical Center and Baystate Health will continue to operate independently.

Why is Mercy Medical Center being transitioned to Baystate Health?
Baystate Health and Trinity Health Of New England have signed a Definitive Agreement to fully transition Mercy Medical Center, its joint venture affiliates, and medical group entities in Massachusetts to Baystate Health. These integrations, subject to regulatory approvals, include all of Mercy Medical Center’s operations, except that Trinity Health Of New England will continue to own and operate Brightside for Families and Children. Trinity Health will continue to own and provide continuing care services in Western Massachusetts via Mercy LIFE, Mary's Meadow At Providence Place, Beaven Kelly Home and Saint Luke’s Home.
This decision was made with the long-term sustainability of healthcare services in our community in mind. Like many healthcare providers, Mercy Medical Center is facing significant challenges and financial pressures. We also know the challenges to accessing health care in Western Massachusetts are significant. Longer wait times and capacity issues would negatively impact both the community and the quality of care, underscoring the importance of preserving and strengthening Mercy Medical Center’s services for the region. By working together and integrating our efforts, we can further address these issues and enable care to remain local for the community.
This strategic partnership ensures that Mercy Medical Center remains a reliable cornerstone of healthcare for the community, while leveraging the resources and expertise of Baystate Health to meet the evolving health needs of the region.

What does this transition mean for patients?
Patients will continue to access Mercy Medical Center and its services in the same ways they do today. Mercy Medical Center and Baystate Health will continue to operate independently until the transition is complete.

Our goal is to make this process seamless while continuing to provide compassionate care that reflects our shared commitment to excellence and enabling care to remain local for the community.
Will patients still be able to come to Mercy Medical Center for care?
Yes. Mercy Medical Center’s dedication to providing accessible, high-quality care remains unchanged. Patients will continue to receive the same trusted care, from the same team, at the same locations.
Again, until the transition is complete and receives all regulatory approvals, Mercy Medical Center and Baystate Health will continue to operate independently.
Are there more changes to Mercy Medical Center’s maternity and newborn services?
No, not at this time. As of Dec. 8, 2025, Mercy Medical Center’s Certified Nurse Midwives moved their delivery services for laboring patients to Baystate Medical Center. Through collaboration and partnership with our faculty and community Women’s Health physicians and providers, Baystate Health has determined how we will deliver safe, high-quality care to more laboring patients in our community. We have rigorously prepared for an additional 800 deliveries annually, including actively recruiting more OB/GYNs, midwives and nurses. Our focus remains, and always has been, on taking care of our community when they need us the most.
Will Baystate Health maintain the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality care?
Absolutely. This decision reflects extensive planning, collaboration and a shared vision for the long-term sustainability of healthcare services in the community. Mercy Medical Center explored potential strategic partnerships and collaborations with other providers in the community and determined Baystate Health shared its vision to preserve access to high-quality healthcare for the region and ensuring health care resources are available in the Springfield, MA community.
We are steadfast in our commitment to delivering high quality care and to achieving zero preventable harm to our caregivers, patients and their families by becoming a High Reliability Organization (HRO). Through our HRO journey and commitment to excellence, two of our hospitals have received “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades this past spring – a national distinction that recognizes our achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm. In 2024, one of our hospitals was recognized with 5-star ratings and two of our hospitals were recognized with four-star ratings for overall hospital quality by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
