Heather Grant, MD
Heather Grant joins the Department as a Post-Doctoral Fellow. She graduated from Yale University with a BA in History of Science & History of Medicine and earned her MD from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. She is now a General Surgery Resident at Baystate Medical Center and recently completed a Master of Science degree in Clinical and Translational Science at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at Tufts University.
Heather started her research career as a medical student and has since worked on a number of clinical research projects through the Department of Surgery and the Institute. Most recently, she published manuscripts exploring the etiology of intussusception following roux-en-Y gastric bypass and examining the effectiveness of a pre-internship Boot Camp prior to the start of surgical internship. She plans to research surgical outcomes and healthcare disparities with a particular focus on the surgical oncology population.
Marcella Jewell
Marcella Jewell joins the Department as a Research Associate. She graduated from Skidmore College in 2015 with a Bachelors of Arts in Government and a minor in Computer Science, and honors including induction into Pi Sigma Alpha. She worked as a senior political operative for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 Presidential Campaign in New England, Indiana, and North Dakota, developing a strong passion for children’s health and well-being. She was promoted to State Director for the general election in Indiana. Afterwards, she worked in environmental and healthcare consulting before returning to school in early 2018 to complete a premedical post-baccalaureate certification program at Elms College with the goal of becoming a physician. In addition, Marcella began working at Baystate Medical Center as an emergency department medical scribe and data analyst for the pediatric emergency department on health services projects. Her primary focus was on improving the care delivered to behavioral health patients plagued by prolonged boarding, and additionally, supporting advocacy initiatives to improve the population health of the pediatric behavioral health population in Western Massachusetts. In June 2019, she joined the Institute as a summer scholar and completed a project analyzing antibiotic prescribing patterns within the pediatric population. Marcella is currently in her first year of the UMass Chan-Baystate PURCH MD/PhD program.
