Newborn medicine specialists, called neonatologists, are board certified pediatric specialists who receive additional training in newborn intensive care. They excel at caring for premature babies, high-risk babies, and babies born with medical problems. Our newborn medicine specialists have the full resources of Baystate Children’s Hospital, with all of its pediatric specialists, behind them. Our Infant Care Services Our newborn medicine specialists care for babies in the Davis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Baystate Children’s Hospital – the only NICU in western Massachusetts. There, they: Provide care to newborns at the time of birth – such as emergency cesarean sections – when delivery may compromise the babies’ health and require immediate medical intervention. Diagnose and treat newborns with serious and life-threatening conditions and medical problems. Coordinate the care of newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery.
