When Your Child Grows Up
Thanks to changes in cardiac surgery and medical care, and advances in diagnostics – sometimes even during pregnancy, children with congenital heart disease are living well into their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. Baystate Medical Center offers an Adult Congenital Heart Program to provide a continuum of care as former pediatric patients transition to adult care.
Children who have congenital heart disease (CHD) need to be followed throughout adulthood. Doctors who specialize in adult CHD, a relatively new specialty, can provide this level of medical attention. Most young people with CHD transition to adult cardiologists between the ages of 18 and 21. Our pediatric cardiologists work closely with our adult cardiologists and patients and their families to ensure a seamless transition.
