Pediatric Palliative Care You want your child to be without pain whenever he or she is sick. When your family is faced with a serious condition, you want excellent care from compassionate caregivers who recognize your need to take a few moments for yourself. Palliative care may be helpful in illnesses that are life-limiting and decrease the normal life expectancy of a child, as well as in illnesses that impact a young person’s quality of life. Examples includes: Cancer and blood disorders Cystic fibrosis HIV/AIDS Major organ failure Progressive genetic, neurologic, and metabolic disorders Severe cerebral palsy Our Palliative Care Services Many families need help locating available palliative care resources in our community. At Baystate Children’s Hospital, we offer a Pediatric Palliative Care Program through the Baystate Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice to support your family and enhance your child’s quality of life. Our pediatric palliative care services include: Case management Counseling Pain and symptom management Respite care (a temporary break from caring for your child) Social services Volunteer support The Baystate Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice provides care at no cost to eligible families. Unlike hospice care, palliative care has no requirement for a six-month prognosis. Your child can receive ongoing treatment for as long as necessary.
