Pediatric Palliative Care

You want your child to be without pain whenever he or she is sick. When your family is faced with a serious condition, you want excellent care from compassionate caregivers who recognize your need to take a few moments for yourself. Palliative care may be helpful in illnesses that are life-limiting and decrease the normal life expectancy of a child, as well as in illnesses that impact a young person’s quality of life.

Examples includes:

  • Cancer and blood disorders
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Major organ failure
  • Progressive genetic, neurologic, and metabolic disorders
  • Severe cerebral palsy

Our Palliative Care Services

Many families need help locating available palliative care resources in our community. At Baystate Children’s Hospital, we offer a Pediatric Palliative Care Program through the Baystate Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice to support your family and enhance your child’s quality of life. Our pediatric palliative care services include:

  • Case management
  • Counseling
  • Pain and symptom management
  • Respite care (a temporary break from caring for your child)
  • Social services
  • Volunteer support

The Baystate Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice provides care at no cost to eligible families. Unlike hospice care, palliative care has no requirement for a six-month prognosis. Your child can receive ongoing treatment for as long as necessary.
