PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Curriculum

The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Program will adapt to the needs of the individual resident and will customize the training program for the resident based upon assessment of the resident’s knowledge, skills, attitudes, abilities, and interests at program orientation and at each of the first three quarterly evaluations. Nevertheless, the program will provide a structured experience to create the basic foundation for quality infectious disease pharmacy practice. The rotation structure is as follows:

Core Required Rotations (4 Week Duration)

Complete All Below

  • Hospital/Pharmacy Orientation (pharmacy, microbiology laboratory, and infection control)
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship (3 blocks)
  • Infectious Disease Consult Service- Fellow/Resident Teaching Team (3 blocks)
  • Infectious Disease Consult Service- Physician Assistant Team
  • Medical ICU (1 block)
  • Pediatric Infectious Disease Consult (1 block)

Elective Rotations (4 Week Duration; Choose 2)

  • Repeat Any Core Rotation
  • Rotation developed by preceptor and resident
  • Academia
  • Emergency Medicin

Longitudinal Learning Experiences

Inpatient Pharmacy Services (12 months)

  • Staffing- inpatient or ICU/AMS (every third weekend)
  • Drug Information & Non-formulary Requests On-Call Pager

Antimicrobial Stewardship Subcommittee Longitudinal (12 months)

  • Prepare and present medication use evaluations
  • Recommend formulary additions or deletions
  • Evaluate the need for new antimicrobial stewardship initiatives
  • Evaluate utility of on-going antimicrobial stewardship initiatives
  • Track and present outcomes related to antimicrobial stewardship program

Residency Research/Quality Improvement Project (12 months)

  • Project design and research
  • IRB Approval
  • Project Presentation (Eastern States, Infectious Disease Conference)
  • Manuscript worthy of publication

Continuing Education Longitudinal (12 months)

  • Pharmacy Grand Rounds Presentations
  • Division of Infectious Diseases Weekly Conference Presentations
  • Continuing Education Presentations
  • Precept/Mentor Pharmacy Students

Adult Infectious Disease Clinic (6 months)

  • Attendance at outpatient clinic with ID attending
  • Identify and resolve medication therapy issues
  • Provide therapeutic drug monitoring services
  • Respond to drug information questions

Education/Academia (12 months)

  • Advanced Teaching (Western New England University)
  • Develop and facilitate didactic lectures
  • Develop active learning cases
  • Facilitate Spring semester course
