When patients learn they will undergo anesthesia during an operation or procedure at Baystate Health, they can rest assured they are under the supervision of highly trained anesthesiologists like Dr. Tyler O’Neil, who will constantly monitor their condition and make adjustments to meet their specific needs, moment by moment.
This specialized care begins during the pre-op assessment when the care team gathers information about a patient’s health history, diagnosis, and other factors that may affect anesthesia. On the day of surgery at Baystate Medical Center, Dr. O’Neil meets with patients before they go into the Operating Room to ask detailed questions that will help him tailor an anesthesia plan to meet their individual needs.
“This is an important moment where I talk to patients, listen to their story, and make a connection,” says Dr. O’Neil. “It’s important that they feel they can trust me.”
Once a patient is in the Operating Room, Dr. O’Neil administers anesthesia through either an IV or an oxygen mask, depending on the procedure. Special sensors gauge how awake or asleep the patient is. During surgery, he continuously monitors vital signs like blood pressure and heart rate, as well as ventilator settings, and administers anti-nausea and pain medications if necessary.
“Once a patient goes under anesthesia for surgery, I am working to ensure they remain safe and comfortable,” says Dr. O’Neil, “doing what is best for them in those moments when they are unable to speak for themselves.”
At the surgery’s conclusion, Dr. O’Neil carefully reduces anesthesia and continues to closely assess the patient as their body and senses slowly awaken. After the patient transitions to Baystate’s Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to fully wake up, a process that can take up to several hours, anesthesiologists like Dr. O’Neil are there should any difficulties or rare reactions to anesthesia arise.
“Those are very rewarding moments, when I see a patient in recovery and they tell me they are doing great and say thank you,” he says.
Dr. O’Neil’s connections to Baystate Medical Center run deep –- lifelong, in fact. He was born at Baystate, and his mom has been a certified nurse anesthetist at the hospital for decades. Sometimes, the two have worked together on the same surgical team. Dr. O’Neil, who grew up in Wilbraham, did his residency at Baystate and knew he wanted to continue his career caring for patients at his local hospital. His wife is a surgical technologist at the hospital.
From critical trauma surgeries that come straight from the Emergency Department to some cardiac procedures, appendix removals, and colonoscopies, Dr. O’Neil provides anesthesia for a wide variety of conditions on any given day. And while most patients don’t witness most of the care he provides, he’s proud to be a part of their healing experience.
