Baystate Health Nurse Residency Program Earns Prestigious Accreditation with Distinction

Springfield, MASS. — Baystate Health is proud to announce that its Nurse Residency Program (BHNRP) has been awarded Accreditation with Distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP)™—the highest level of recognition available.

The ANCC PTAP sets the global standard for nurse residency programs, recognizing organizations that provide exceptional support to registered nurses with less than 12 months of experience as they transition into professional practice. This honor affirms that Baystate Health’s Nurse Residency Program not only meets, but exceeds, the rigorous, evidence-based criteria required to guide new nurses toward long-term success in their careers.

Baystate Health first earned ANCC accreditation in 2018 and was reaccredited in 2021. The Nurse Residency Program is a comprehensive ten-month initiative designed for newly licensed registered nurses with less than ten months of experience. The program blends hands-on clinical training with monthly educational seminars, professional development pathways, and mentorship opportunities.

During the most recent review, ANCC appraisers highlighted several exemplary components of the Baystate Health program, including:

  • Professional Development Pathways – Each nurse resident selects one of four pathways to pursue, ensuring a tailored learning experience.
  • Apprentice Nurse Program – An initiative credited with significantly improving nurse retention rates.
  • Listening Circles – Safe, supportive forums where residents can share experiences, reflect on challenges, and promote well-being.
  • Focus on Health Equity – Incorporating “health equity assessments” into patient care, alongside volunteer and educational work addressing social determinants of health (SDOH).

The accreditation is effective for four years, from August 25, 2025, through October 31, 2029.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work of our educators, mentors, and nurse residents, all of whom are deeply committed to advancing nursing practice and patient care,” said Miller.

The BHNRP supports the professional growth of new graduate nurses through clinical immersion, mentorship, and structured learning opportunities, preparing them to thrive as confident, compassionate caregivers.
