Welcome to Baystate Med-Peds!

Welcome to the combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Program at Baystate-UMass Chan! Within the largest teaching healthcare institution in Western Massachusetts, our 4-year program provides our residents well-rounded and individualized training to match their career goals within outpatient medicine, hospital medicine or subspeciality. For 43 years, our program has taken pride in training exceptional Med-Peds physicians, educators, advocates, and leaders.

A Vibrant and Supportive Med-Peds Community

As one of the larger programs in the Northeast, at Baystate we have a strong Med-Peds identity and presence. Our residents are training with Med-Peds faculty in the adult & pediatric wards, our outpatient Med-Peds clinic, and subspecialty clinics. Many of our Med-Peds faculty are also Baystate alumni. In collaboration with our Internal Medicine and Pediatric Departments, our integrated programs foster a collegial atmosphere that throughout the course of training contribute to impactful mentorship relationships and friendships. Baystate Med-Peds has a culture that sets us apart. Together, we care for our patients—and for each other.

The Community We Serve

We have the privilege of serving a large and varied patient population from across Western Massachusetts and our neighboring states of Connecticut, Vermont and New Hampshire. This includes providing care for immigrant communities and serving urban, rural, and suburban populations. Throughout training, our residents learn the importance of understanding the uniqueness and challenges faced by the community we serve and have opportunities to engage with local organizations.

Innovative Approach to Training

Our Learner-Manager-Teacher model, an innovation in graduate medical education that was developed at Baystate, emphasizes graduated autonomy as our residents progress throughout their years of training. Our program takes pride in the high caliber of training that balances supervision and independent decision-making for our residents.

For those of you seeking the fulfilling challenge of pursuing a combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency, at Baystate Med-Peds we look forward to sharing the training to support your success. Consider joining us in Western Massachusetts, where you will have the opportunity to make a difference serving a broad patient population while enjoying the history, culture, natural beauty, and quality of life this region offers.

Our Faculty are Med-Peds Leaders

All members of our program leadership have served in executive leadership or on committees with the Medicine-Pediatrics Program Director's Association.

Our Program Director and Associate Program Directors are Med-Peds trained, and the majority of our faculty are double-boarded in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine.

Members of our Med-Peds faculty serve in leadership roles within the inpatient and outpatient settings at Baystate Medical Center.

And all of our hospitalist faculty are Med-Peds trained.

Continuity Clinic: All Ages, All Stages

Our continuity clinic at Baystate Mason Square Neighborhood Health Center was the first combined Med-Peds ambulatory training site in the U.S.

Throughout the course of training, you will have your own panel of patients from newborns to all ages. Within a well-resourced community health center with integrated behavioral health, community health workers, case management, financial counselor, clinical pharmacy team and on-site specialists (just to name a few services provided), we provide comprehensive primary care to our community.
