Welcome from the Chair
As Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at UMass Chan Medical School Baystate and Pediatrician-in-Chief of Baystate Children’s Hospital, it is my honor and pleasure to welcome you to our department webpage.
Baystate Children’s Hospital (BCH) is the only accredited children’s hospital delivering tertiary care to infants, children, and adolescents in western Massachusetts. Our vision is to create a better world for children in Western Mass by reducing health care disparities, treating illness and restoring/maintaining wellness.
Here are a few interesting facts about BCH and the pediatrics department:
The Hospital
BCH is a “hospital within a hospital”. You'll find us located within Baystate Medical Center, a large academic medical center with the region’s only level 1 trauma center.
- We have 107 inpatient beds
- 55 beds are in the Level III neonatal intensive care unit.
- 7 are in the pediatric intensive care unit.
- 45 are in the children and adolescents unit.
- We have the only pediatric-specific emergency department in the region.
- Our subspecialists have out-patient practices at Baystate Children’s Specialty Center (BCSC), a state of the art facility close to the main hospital campus.
The Department
Our Department provides the majority of inpatient and subspecialty pediatric care in western Mass.
- Our department has approximately 70 physicians in 15 subspecialties.
- The pediatric faculty focuses on clinical care and medical education, and publishing 30 to 40 articles, book chapters and reviews a year.
- Many of our general pediatrics, genetics, and neonatology faculty also do clinical research.
We're extremely focused on the community we live and work in. Over 50 percent of the pediatricians in this community trained at Baystate, and it's our mission to train pediatricians that will care for the children here in western Massachusetts.
