Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship Curriculum
The goal of our program is to provide fellows with comprehensive exposure to the evaluation and management of both common and rare endocrine disorders across inpatient and outpatient settings.
Inpatient Consults
As the year progresses, our fellows lead the endocrine consultative service at BMC to assist in the diagnosis and management of endocrine patients.
The consult service is closely supervised by our experienced faculty to provide guidance and assistance.
Fellows have ongoing opportunities to teach Internal Medicine residents and medical students rotating through the Endocrine service.
Outpatient Clinics
The clinics occupy modern, fully equipped offices with close, collaborative working with nursing, educators (CDCES), pharmacy liaisons, and administrative support. Endocrine faculty actively supervise fellows in every clinic setting, dedicated to their progress and guiding them to become progressively independent.
Robust ambulatory training enables fellows to build progressive independence, develop a nuanced approach to patient care, and gain exposure to a wide variety of clinical experiences.
Beyond routine outpatient clinics with Endocrine faculty, the program offers dedicated specialized clinics that provide fellows with enhanced exposure and focused learning opportunities in specific areas of endocrinology.
One-on-one training in the following specialized areas.
- Thyroid Clinic: One Session every week during outpatient rotation
- Theoretical: We have dedicated longitudinal “Thyroid clinics” where fellows see patients for evaluation of Thyroid nodule and Thyroid cancer with faculty having special interest in this area.
- Practical: Our fellows start their training on phantoms where our fellows practice the basics of thyroid ultrasound and fine-needle aspirations.
By the end of the fellowship, our fellows are well equipped with the knowledge and experience to independently perform thyroid ultrasounds and biopsies.
Diabetes Education
Learn the nuances of CGM, Insulin Pumps, and all aspects of diabetic education.
Insulin Pump and CGM Training: Hands on training on Insulin pumps and CGMs.
We have the ability to perform in-house complex Endocrine diagnostics such as IPSS, AVS, 72 hours fast, growth hormone suppression and stimulation testing, and Saline suppression tests among others.
Electives
Our fellows benefit from having a large university-based hospital with expertise within the institution.
Electives are offered in multiple specialties including but not limited to:
- Pediatric endocrinology
- Endocrine surgery
- Research elective
- Reproductive endocrinology
- Nuclear Medicine
- Clinical Research
Fellows participate in Quality improvement and Clinical research projects with support and guidance from the faculty members in the division. As part of the research experience, fellows analyze background information in a specific area, propose a research project, and obtain data under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Fellows contribute to committees, including the Graduate Medical Education committee.
