BMC Neurology Laboratory

Under the direction of Dr. Anthony H. Jackson, Director of the Neurology Laboratory and Robert M. Hayden, R.EEG/EP.T, Manager of the Neurology Laboratories, the Neurology Laboratory at Baystate Medical Center provides state-of-the-art neurological testing for inpatient and outpatient adult and pediatric patients.

The laboratory staff includes:

  • Neurologists
  • Physiatrists
  • Pulmonologist
  • Technologists

Many of the staff are board certifiedin sub-specialties such as polysomnography and electromyography.

The Neurology Laboratory has two separate locations within Baystate Medical Center, each with specific testing capabilities.

  • The laboratory on Wesson 4 provides
    • Inpatient and outpatient EEG (electroencephalography)
    • AEEG (ambulatory EEG)
    • VEEG (video electroencephalography)
    • PSG (polysomnography)
    • TCD (transcranial doppler)
    • EP (evoked potential) testing.

All testing rooms within the Wesson 4 laboratory have

    • Networked video/audio capabilities
    • Oxygen and suction for mobile anesthesia equipment
    • Specialized ventilation systems.

There are six remote testing rooms located on the Neurosciences Unit adjacent to the laboratory, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Infant/Childrens', and three rooms in the Adult Intensive Care Unit.  Portable EEG, EP, EMG, PSG, TCD, AEEG and VEEG are also available.

  • The laboratory on Springfield 4, under the direction of Dr. George D. Baquis, provides inpatient and outpatient EMGs (electromyography). This laboratory contains three large testing rooms of which one is uniquely equipped for pediatric patients having sound dampening walls and ceiling. This laboratory also performs Botulinum toxin injections under EMG direction, punch muscle biopsies in conjunction with the Neuropathology Laboratory, and portable EMG/NVC (nerve conduction study).

The laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art computerized digital acquisition and reading systems. There are five Network Concepts, Inc. (NCI) digital EEG units, three NCI digital reader stations, a Cadwell Easy Reader digital ambulatory EEG unit with three 32 channel recorders, a Cadwell Excel Evoked Potential computer, and an EME transcranial doppler computer. The digital EEG units are capable of reformatting EEG data after the study is completed. All NCI acquisition units are networked in the laboratory and throughout isolated hospital locations. The EMG laboratory utilizes a Dantec Counter Point Mark IV and two Viking IV EMG units.

The Neurology Laboratory is operational during the day from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday with night staff available for overnight studies Sunday to Friday from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
