Ask your doctor for a referral.

The term “cognition” covers a wide range of activities that relate to thinking, such as:
  • Attention span
  • Concentration
  • Decision-making
  • Emotions
  • Intelligence
  • Judgment
  • Language
  • Learning
  • Memory
  • Processing speed
  • Spatial perception

If you have trouble with these or other activities related to brain function, you may have a cognitive impairment. At Baystate Health, our team of experts is here to give you the care you need to manage your condition.

Causes of Cognitive Impairments

Several different neurological conditions (problems of the brain, spinal cord, or nerves) can cause cognitive impairments. Some of these conditions include:

Diagnosis of Cognitive Impairments

Your primary care doctor or other health care provider may perform basic tests to diagnose your condition. If your doctor thinks you need more in-depth neurodiagnostic or neuropsychological tests, he or she can refer you to a Baystate facility.

Treatment of Cognitive Impairments

If your cognitive impairment is caused by a brain injury, you’ll work with our physiatry (physical medicine) team. If your cognitive impairment is the result of memory or movement disorder, you’ll either work with our geriatrics team or our multidisciplinary team in Baystate Medical Center’s Memory Disorders Program.

We may be able to prescribe medications to help you with your symptoms. Your treatment plan may also include rehabilitation, including occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech and language therapy.

You’ll learn skills to adapt and compensate for your cognitive impairment so you can be as healthy and independent as possible.
