What is Polyposis?

Polyposis is a rare condition that causes many polyps (bumps) to grow in the colon at an early age. It can run in your family or develop spontaneously.

People with polyposis may have hundreds or thousands of polyps. They have a very high risk of developing colorectal cancer. 

Examples of polyposis conditions include:

• Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
• Gardner syndrome
• Lynch syndrome—also known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC)Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS)
• Juvenile polyposis syndrome (JPS)

Diagnosing Polyposis

Early screening using colonoscopy, CT scans, flexibly sigmoidoscopy, or stool testing is the best way to find polyps in your colon before they develop into cancer.

Some people with colon polyps may notice pain, a change in their bowel habits, or rectal bleeding.

Additionally, since many disorders related to polyposis are hereditary, you may wish to consider genetic counseling.

Polyposis Treatment

Treating polyposis syndrome typically focuses on removing all or part of the colorectum, which can be done laparoscopically and robotically. This minimally invasive surgery technique can lead to faster healing with fewer complications.
