Pediatrics Residency Program Director's Message

Thank you for your interest in the UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate Pediatrics Residency Program! We strive to create a robust academic learning environment and to personalize your education to meet your future career aspirations. Through our Learner-Manager-Teacher model, your medical knowledge, autonomy, and leadership will grow over the course of your residency.

We will support your growth as a pediatrician through a collegial environment that focuses on the whole person, wellness opportunities, and professional development.

The heart of our program is the Baystate Children’s Hospital, which is the only Children’s Hospital in Western Massachusetts. The Hospital is home to a 45-bed inpatient unit, 8-bed PICU, 55-bed Level III NICU, a busy newborn nursery, a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department, and a wide array of pediatric subspecialty services.

However, our soul is our continuity clinic, centered in Springfield, that continues to care for the children and families in our diverse and often underserved community. Our clinic functions as an Accountable Care Organization focused on social determinants of health. We support families in the context of their community, with an education specialist who communicates with schools, an integrated behavioral health team who can provide therapy, referrals, and medication management, as well as a care coordination team who assist families with medical and social complexity.

As a graduate of this residency, your success and the success of the program are deeply linked. Our program is committed to developing the next generation of pediatricians, who are prepared to take on the complexities of pediatric medicine, become advocates for children, and develop into medical educators.

Your training will be set in the beautiful backdrop of Western Massachusetts and New England. With its outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, beaches, cultural experiences with symphony performances and museums, sporting events, and foodie scene, Western Massachusetts is a great place to live, work, and play.

We love working and living here and want you to join us! We look forward to meeting you and sharing more about Baystate Pediatrics and the community we serve.

Sincerely,

Kenneth E. Bujold, DO
Director, Pediatric Residency Program
