An 8 semester part-time option is also available.
Prepare for a career in midwifery
As a certified nurse-midwife (CNM), you will have many career options in practice, research and education.
Program Philosophy and Objectives
Through both didactic and clinical components, our program teaches the foundation of nurse midwifery practice and prepares you to manage the health care of low-risk women and their newborns.
When you graduate, you will be prepared to work with cultural competency, serving varied racial, ethnic and socioeconomic populations.
You will also be awarded a certificate in nurse-midwifery from Baystate Medical Center, and will be eligible to take the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) certification examination to become Certified Nurse Midwives.
Commitment to Social Justice Work
We are committed to standing up against racism and discrimination.
Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia have no place in our education program or in the larger community of Baystate Medical Center.
The Baystate Midwifery Education Program welcomes students regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, language preference, religious belief, or immigration status.
Accreditation
The Baystate Midwifery Education Program follows a 5-semester curriculum that is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME), and includes all the knowledge, skills and behaviors delineated in the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice.
About our graduates
Curriculum and Course of Study
Through our affiliation with the Midwifery Institute of Thomas Jefferson University, which offers distance-based master's completion, we offer the option of concurrent master's degree study. As of 2010, students are required to have a master's degree in a health-related field in order to sit for the national certification exam of the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).
Midwife/Physician Collaboration
Baystate Medical Center--one of only two medical centers in the U.S. with both midwifery education and OB/Gyn residency programs—was a demonstration site for a Josiah Macy Foundation grant for the development and implementation of interprofessional education curriculum.
Faculty
Our faculty in the Division of Midwifery and Community Health have appointments in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. All are in active clinical practice.
All together, our faculty has more than 110 years of clinical practice and 100 years of faculty experience.
