Breast Oncology Fellowship Curriculum

Curriculum Summary

Breast surgical oncology is an ever-evolving field that goes beyond surgery alone. We provide a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to breast disease education that supports a balanced exposure to all aspects of breast care, and encompasses the broad spectrum of breast disease—malignant breast disease, benign breast disease, high risk and gene mutation carriers, and wound care.

Rotations

Breast Surgery (32 weeks)

Multidisciplinary experience (12 weeks per year, 3 days per week)
Rotations (4 weeks each):

  • Plastic/Reconstructive Surgery
  • Medical Oncology & Genetics
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Radiology and Pathology
  • Psycho-oncology/Outreach/Social work/Rehabilitation

Didactics

  • Textbook (to be determined)
  • BESAP (American Society of Breast Surgeons’ web-based CME learning tool for physicians who treat breast disease)
  • Journal club
  • Q&A session
  • Leadership materials

Apprenticeship Model

  • Monthly schedule will be created for broad exposure to the individual surgeons’ clinics and surgeries
  • Fellow’s clinic
  • Continuity of care (5 patients)
  • Call Schedule
    • Monday Friday (with exceptions)
    • Every other weekend
  • Residency Program
    • Overseeing the junior residents and medical students while on service
    • Monthly service rounds
