PURCH: Population-based Urban & Rural Community Health

PURCH Gets You Out of the Classroom and into the Community

Not Just for Medical Students Interested in Primary Care

Whatever medical specialty you wish to pursue, PURCH’s innovative approach to clinical practice, community engagement, and policy/advocacy provides a foundation upon which to build your career.

how to apply

PURCH is Built By—and For—Our Communities

Be a Physician Valued by the Community

Community members told us the kind of physicians they would love to have:

Excellent Diagnosticians who are Empathetic, Reflective, Team-oriented, and Leaders who can be led.

We orient your entire medical education experience around these characteristics—we call them the 5 PURCH principles.

Dig Deeply into Health Issues in Western Mass

You will learn to apply population health principles to healthcare issues—and underlying social determinants of health—common to our under-served urban and rural communities.

Learn and Work Directly with Community Organizations

Baystate Community Faculty—non-clinical community members who live, work, and pray in the communities served by Baystate Health—bring the lived experience of community residents to all aspects of your education.

You will collaborate with community organizations across all four years on your Population & Community Health Clerkship, electives, Capstone projects, and other initiatives.

A Culture of Shared Values

PURCH's smaller class size of approximately 25 medical students makes Brightwood House an exceptionally close learning community whose faculty and students are guided by the PURCH principles in how they teach, learn, connect, and lead.

Get the Clinical Experience You Need

Baystate Health, the regional campus of UMass Chan Medical School in Springfield, MA, is one of the largest academic health systems in New England.

During your clinical training you will see the gamut of medical conditions as you work on interdisciplinary clinical teams of professionals and students.
