Many women will have uterine fibroids, also called leiomyomas or myomas, without even knowing it. Fibroids don’t always cause symptoms. But if you’re having heavier periods or pelvic pressure or discomfort, it’s time to talk to your gynecologist. Many women have an ultrasound of their pelvis and find out then that they have fibroids.

WHAT ARE UTERINE FIBROIDS?
Uterine fibroids are tumors that grow in your uterus. They are typically not cancerous and do not lead to cancer. They come in many different sizes—from microscopic to very large.
Most fibroids do not cause problems and will not interfere with getting pregnant. Often, they shrink after menopause when your hormone levels change.
Depending on the location and size of uterine fibroids, treatment options for uterine fibroids include:
- Keeping an eye on them
- Medicine to shrink or slow their growth
- Minimally invasive procedures to remove them (this can be done through the vagina or through the abdomen)
