Neurological conditions (problems of the brain, spinal cord, or nerves) and orthopedic conditions (problems of the bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments) can be painful. Depending on your condition, therapeutic injections may be the right treatment option to bring you relief from your symptoms.
What Are Therapeutic Injections?
Baystate Health neurologists or physiatrists use therapeutic injections to treat your condition at the site of your pain. These injections may include:
- Anesthetics: medicine to relieve your pain
- Corticosteroids: medicines that are similar to a hormone your body produces naturally called cortisol
- Hyaluronic acid: a synthetic substance that mimics the natural fluid your body produces to lubricate your joints
How Do Therapeutic Injections Work?
Depending on your condition, we may use ultrasound or other imaging technology to help guide the injection to just the right spot. The benefits of the injection can last a few weeks up to several months. You and your doctor will work together to set up an injection schedule that meets your needs.
What Conditions Respond Well to Therapeutic Injections?
We treat a wide variety of conditions with therapeutic injections, including:
We also use botulinum toxin (Botox®) to treat certain neurological disorders.
