Molly Ingemi Receives Inaugural Anthony P. Lovell Award

Molly Ingemi MD, Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health Class of 2022, is the recipient of the inaugural Anthony P. Lovell MD Memorial Endowed Award for Excellence.

About the Lovell Award

The Lovell Award honors the outstanding achievements of a graduating medical student from UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate who is returning to Baystate Health for residency training—and who epitomizes Dr. Lovell’s life-long commitment to serving the community, providing highly skilled and deeply compassionate medical care to patients, and who shows great promise for a remarkable career in medicine.

Dr. Ingemi will begin her Internal Medicine residency training at UMass Chan-Baystate this July. Her clinical interests include addiction medicine, care for under-served communities, and care for critically ill patients.

"Being the first recipient of the  Lovell Award is an incredible honor," said Ingemi. "I am deeply grateful to the Lovell family and the PURCH program, and can't wait to start residency at Baystate!"

After graduating from Northeastern University, Ingemi joined AmeriCorps where she served at the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. She had several roles throughout her three years there including, educating patients at risk for Hepatitis C in shelters and substance use treatment programs, linking them to care, and providing support throughout treatment. She also participated in research activities and co-authored a journal article: Hepatitis C treatment outcomes among homeless-experienced individuals at a community health centre in Boston.

While in medical school, Ingemi volunteered for the Hampden County Medical Reserve Corps and for the Friends of the Homeless/Baystate Health partnership designed for homeless individuals exposed to COVID-19. Dr. Ingemi also volunteered to administer flu vaccines to elementary school children as part of a UMass community health intervention.

Dr. Kevin Hinchey, Senior Associate Dean of Education, UMass Chan-Baystate, presented the Lovell Award to Dr. Ingemi during a pre-graduation celebration on June 4 where other student and faculty awards were announced.

About the Anthony P. Lovell, MD Memorial Endowed Award for Excellence

Established in 2018, The Lovell Award supports a graduating medical student from UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate who enters a Baystate Health residency program, with a preference for a student entering internal medicine or a residency related to primary care. This award is funded by a grant from the Lovell family.

Dr. Lovell retired after 35 years as a cardiologist in Springfield. With a life-long interest in serving the community, Dr. Lovell helped initiate one of the first cardiac rehab programs in the region at the Springfield YMCA. He was also instrumental in founding the first Ethics Committee at Baystate Medical Center, and served as chair during the early 1980s. In 2005 Dr. Lovell received the American Heart Association's Ralph Gianelly Award for excellence in integrity, leadership and service.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Lovell served on the Board of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra before retiring as its President, and was vice chair of the Connecticut River Watershed Council where he helped energize the annual Source-to-Sea Cleanup.
