Baystate Health Appoints Abdul Al Hamamsy as Vice President and Chief Risk Officer

Springfield, MASS. — Baystate Health has appointment of Abdul Al Hamamsy, JD, MPH, as Vice President and Chief Risk Officer, effective October 20, 2025. In this role, Al Hamamsy will lead Baystate Health’s enterprise risk management and insurance operations, including clinical risk management, corporate and captive insurance programs, and claims and loss management. He will work collaboratively with leaders across the system to strengthen Baystate’s culture of safety, quality, and accountability.

Al Hamamsy brings over twenty-five years of healthcare experience, including leadership in risk management, claims, and insurance. He is known for his expertise his expertise in enterprise risk and claims strategy, developing/implementing communication and resolution programs (CRPs), and collaborating towards innovative approaches to safety and learning.

He joins Baystate Health from The University of Kansas Health System, where he directed risk and insurance operations and co-led the creation of two high-performing captive insurance companies. He also previously held senior leadership roles at The Risk Authority, Stanford Health Care’s captive insurance company, where he developed an industry-leading CRP, the Process for Early Assessment, Resolution, and Learning (PEARL).

A certified professional coach and Just Culture trainer, Al Hamamsy is deeply committed to advancing collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within healthcare organizations. He holds a Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University School of Law, a Master of Public Health in Health Administration and Policy from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Cairo University Faculty of Medicine.
