Interventional Cardiology Fellowship, UMass Chan - Baystate

We currently offer three positions for this fully accredited Interventional Cardiology program. Applicants must have completed an accredited three year fellowship in clinical cardiology, and be board certified/eligible in adult cardiovascular disease.

There are 4 catheterization laboratories. The projected volume is approximately 1400 coronary and 400 peripheral interventions per year. The Fellow is responsible for the work up, the interventional procedure and post-procedure. This is a dedicated 4th year interventional program with opportunity in research.

Program

The Interventional Cardiology fellowship provides training on the pre- and post-procedural management of Interventional cardiovascular patients, on the performance of Interventional cardiology and peripheral vascular procedures, and on education and research devoted to Interventional cardiology.

Faculty

There are 11 interventional cardiologists who comprise the fellowship's faculty. This group shares participation in a number of ongoing research trials.

Expectations for Fellows

Clinical Role

The Interventional cardiology fellows function as consultants for patients with acute coronary syndromes, both in the hospital and in outpatient settings, including the Emergency Department. Outpatient experience also includes seeing new or follow-up patients in an outpatient ambulatory setting.

  • perform, on average, two to three Interventional procedures daily
  • see the patient pre-procedure and explain the procedure to the patient
  • discuss the indications, coronary anatomical findings, and equipment selection with the Interventional cardiologist
  • see the patient on the day of, and the day following the procedure, and are responsible, together with the interventional cardiologist, to deal with peri-procedural complications.

Conferences

The interventional fellows are involved in the preparation of catheterization conferences. Catheterization conference occurs weekly, with the fellows preparing 2-3 conferences monthly dealing with patient selection, complications, or unusual aspects of interventional cardiology cases. The other catheterization conferences are didactic conferences, discussing issues of interest to interventional cardiologists, as well as discussing research aspects of interventional cardiology.

Research

The interventional fellows are encouraged to develop and participate in a research project during their year as interventional fellows
