Mentorship

“Program’s structured mentorship has been invaluable. I’m especially grateful for the mentors I’ve found here—individuals who have guided me through career decisions, personal development, leadership growth, and even financial planning. As a woman in medicine, having that kind of support has been transformative. These mentors are among the most meaningful gifts I’ll take with me from Baystate” – Graduate

At UMass Chan Medical School – Baystate, mentorship is a vital part of our residency culture. We are committed to supporting each resident’s personal and professional growth through a diverse, personalized mentorship network designed to meet their unique needs and goals.

Comprehensive Mentorship Programs

Our mentorship program fosters a culture of mutual support, continuous learning, and lifelong growth. We offer a variety of mentorship opportunities to ensure our residents receive guidance and encouragement throughout your residency journey:

  • Peer Mentorship Program: New residents are paired with experienced peers who provide practical advice, emotional support, and help them navigate the daily challenges of residency life This support can take many forms—whether it’s advice when starting new rotations, someone to vent to during tough times at work, a connection to potential research mentors, or simply a friend to grab coffee with. There’s no wrong answer, and needs may evolve throughout the year.
  • Chief Buddy System: Our chief residents serve as approachable mentors and wellness champions, offering leadership insights, career advice, and advocacy throughout your training.
  • Faculty Advisors: Each resident is paired with a faculty program leader—either an associate director, assistant director, or director of the primary care track. These advisors meet with residents semi-annually to ensure they are on track for success, provide support during both positive and challenging times, and offer coaching on individualized learning plans as needed.
  • Specialty Mentorship: Whether your interests lie in general Internal Medicine or a subspecialty, faculty mentors with expertise in your chosen area will provide tailored guidance on clinical development and career pathways, sharing insights into the field and helping residents build professional connections.
  • Scholarship Champions: Dedicated mentors support residents interested in research and scholarly activity by guiding academic pursuits, helping shape projects, and assisting in building a strong scholarly portfolio to advance future careers.
  • Coaching for Fellowship Applicants: Residents pursuing fellowship training receive specialized coaching from our chief residents, program faculty, program director, and fellowship directors, to refine their applications, prepare for interviews, and plan their next steps, ensuring residents are well-prepared and confident as they navigate the fellowship application process.
  • URIM Mentors: Recognizing the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, we provide mentorship tailored to residents who are Underrepresented in Medicine (URIM). These mentors offer support, advocacy, and guidance to help navigate unique challenges and foster a sense of community.
  • Personalized Coaching from the Program Director: Our Program Director meets with all residents formally once a year and informally several times throughout the year, offering individualized sessions focused on career planning, professional development, and addressing any challenges you may encounter during residency
