Greenfield Family Medicine Residency Program-at-a-Glance

The Greenfield Family Medicine Residency program at UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate strives to be an exemplary program training our residents to be the family physicians their communities need and deserve.

Mission Statement

The Greenfield Family Medicine Residency trains family physicians who are innovative in their practice, adaptable to the needs of their patients, engaged with their communities, procedurally skilled, and committed to evidence-based medicine with a focus on wellness and prevention.

The flexibility of the program allows residents to pursue unique interests, develop and implement leadership skills, and maintain work-life harmony.

We value authenticity and strive to develop physicians who are passionate about and fulfilled by what they do, within the clinic walls and beyond.

Work-Life Harmony

We recognize the toll that modern medicine and broken healthcare systems exact upon physicians, especially those in training. Physician burnout and moral injury are real, and we strive continuously to ensure that our residents are supported holistically and prepared to maintain resiliency throughout residency and beyond.

At our program, we show our commitment to this with a schedule that maximizes our residents’ time spent in high-yield educational activities while minimizing night and weekend hours.

Living Here

Classic New England Vibes

From the heights of Mount Sugarloaf to the rapids of the Green River, the craft breweries and farm-to-table restaurants, the charming independent bookstores, and coffeehouses along the Connecticut River and in the hill towns, there’s no place we’d rather call home!

Our residency is located in the heart of Franklin County in Greenfield Massachusetts. Close to everything, but next to nothing in comparison, there’s always something new and exciting to explore outside of clinic.

Living in Greenfield

Two of our first class of residents live locally, here in Greenfield. Here are their thoughts on what it’s like to live in the small town that our residency calls home:

Living in Greenfield has been a wonderful experience! You can’t beat having a commute under five minutes or a short walk on nice days. Since all but two of our rotations are here in Greenfield, we wanted to provide a little perspective on what its like to live locally.

If you enjoy the outdoors, we have several local tennis courts, expansive hiking trails, and the town itself is incredibly walkable. We’re a short drive to Barton’s Cove if you enjoy kayaking, which you can rent on-site or bring if you have your own. We’re also a short drive from the river where you can throw in a tube or raft and enjoy a leisurely day in the sun as you float down. There are also numerous local farms, so you can spend an afternoon picking through blueberries, strawberries and whatever else happens to be seasonal at the time. For indoor recreation, residents have been provided with a complimentary membership to our local YMCA which hosts a variety of events in addition to a full pool and gym.

There’s also no shortage of options for food and drink locally. Greenfield has a great brewery, People’s Pint, that serves excellent food, as well as several quality pizza shops (Village Pizza for Greek-style, Sofia’s for square-cut pies). Some of our other favorites in Greenfield are Manna House (Korean), Namaste (Indian), Kobe (Hibachi/Sushi) and China Gourmet (Chinese/Sushi). For breakfast, Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters has great bagel sandwiches and coffees. One of our favorite farms – Hager’s – has maple soft serve and fried dough served with maple cream that have become a favorite. There’s also a farm-to-table restaurant with a rotating menu, Hope and Olive, which is one of the best restaurants in the region. For dessert, stop by the Ice Cream Alley which serves ice cream from all of the local creameries. If cocktails are more your thing, artisan cocktails are available at 10Forward and Main Street Bar and Grill.

Just outside of Greenfield is Treehouse Brewing Company, which is a nationally top-ranked brewery that also serves excellent pizzas and hosts food trucks and live music with larger events on their newly built stage for the summer. North Star is another excellent brewery that grows their own hops and is a short drive away that hosts food trucks as well. Posada has excellent Mexican and Salvadoran food. There are also sugar houses nearby where you can get their maple syrup served with a breakfast platter during the sugaring season. And you can’t forget the legendary Richardson’s Candy Kitchen that serves some of the best homemade chocolates we’ve had. As both beer critics and foodies, Rachel and I have found numerous spots that keep us coming back that are either a short walk or drive from our apartment.

For local entertainment, we have the Hawks and Reed performing arts center which hosts bands from all over the valley. We’ve seen our favorite local cover band play here as well as a funk band – both of which drew good sized crowds and put on great shows! We also went to a drag brunch here which was a blast. The Hangar in Greenfield has a full arcade with air hockey, pool, cornhole and other games. Local spots also host karaoke, comedy shows, bingo and other events.

We’ve been here for a year now and still haven’t fully explored all of the local spots, but we’ve deeply enjoyed living in this wonderful community and having all this available at our doorstep!
