High Street Health Center Closed

The Baystate High Street Health Center, located at 140 High St in Springfield, is currently closed due to a broken water pipe. Providers are reaching out to patients impacted by this closure. Patients should continue to call (413) 794-2511 for care needs, including telehealth. All other provider sites and clinics are open.

Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine Research

Pulmonary and Critical Care Division faculty are active clinical researchers—multiple investigators receive NIH support.

The division participates in many clinical trials, including sepsis, delirium, and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) through the PETAL Network.

Faculty have recently published research in outcome assessment, severity scoring, novel therapeutics for shock and ARDS, value-based care, cost analysis, ethics, sedatives and neuromuscular blocking agents.

Active research programs in many areas of pulmonary disease and critical care medicine, including:

  • Acute Lung Injury/ARDS
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Sepsis
  • Thoracic Ultrasound
  • ICU delirium
  • ICU mobility
  • Non-invasive ventilation

Research Expectations for Fellows

The research goals for Pulmonary and Critical Care fellows include:

  • Developing an understanding of how research ideas evolve
  • Nuances of study design
  • Importance of developing an informed consent form and subsequently obtaining informed consent
  • Implementing a research protocol
  • Carrying out the research project in a way that is scientifically rigorous as well as compassionate and humanistic
