Pediatric Hospital Medicine Curriculum
The UMass Chan Baystate PHM fellowship became ACGME accredited in 2024 with 1 fellow per year starting in 2026. The training lasts 2 years and is divided into 3 separate areas each comprising one-third of training: core clinical Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) skills, scholarship experience, and individualized curriculum.
Courses
Core Clinical PHM Skills - 32 weeks
- Baystate Children’s Hospital - During their clinical rotations at our primary site, fellows will care for patients with a wide range of illnesses including general pediatrics patients and complex care patients. During these rotations they will also participate in the care of patients with surgical problems and patients receiving palliative care. Fellows will work on interprofessional teams where they will also gain additional experience in medical education, patient safety, and quality improvement as part of their daily workday.
- Berkshire Medical Center (Community Experience) - Fellows will participate in all of the clinical roles that the pediatric hospitalists at our community site are involved with to ensure they can reflect upon the experience of a community hospitalist. This will include rounding on the general pediatric service, care for newborns in the nursery and delivery room and be actively involved as consultants in the emergency department and with surgical subspecialties.
- In addition to the skills developed during their wards rotations, fellows will also have opportunity over the course of their training to increase their knowledge and skills with designated rotations in the fields of:
- Newborn nursery
- Care of patients with medical complexity
- Care of patients with surgical problems
- Procedural sedation/Procedural Skills
- Palliative care/Pain Management
Scholarship Experience - 32 weeks
At the beginning of fellowship, fellows will meet with program director to discuss career interests and plans for scholarly projects. They will also undergo additional training in the first year of fellowship in research, medical education, quality improvement and other health systems science domains to assist in their scholarly projects. Fellows will be paired with a faculty mentor who will be able to provide feedback and guidance on scholarly works.
Individualized Curriculum - 32 weeks
Throughout training, fellows will meet with the program director and other faculty mentors to select rotations based on their career interests and needs. These may include both clinical and non-clinical electives or additional time to focus on their scholarship activities. Fellows will also have the ability to potentially design their own elective with the approval of program leadership.
Schedule
Rotations are divided into 2-4 week blocks. Block schedule below represents individual 4-week rotations but will be divided to maintain balance of clinical and scholarly activities.
