High Street Health Center Closed

The Baystate High Street Health Center, located at 140 High St in Springfield, is currently closed due to a broken water pipe. Providers are reaching out to patients impacted by this closure. Patients should continue to call (413) 794-2511 for care needs, including telehealth. All other provider sites and clinics are open.

Emergency Medicine Administration & Operations Curriculum

Leadership 

As a fellow, you will have opportunities to serve on different committees at Baystate Medical Center or any of our community affiliates throughout Baystate Health.

You are also encouraged to serve on national committees through the American College of Emergency Physicians, Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, or the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Quality and Process Improvement 

You will be actively involved in monitoring quality measures and in continuous quality improvement projects in the emergency department.

Emergency Department Operations Management/Finance 

You will be involved in departmental meetings and become well versed in current state and federal regulations concerning the safe practice of emergency medicine. You will also discuss budget related operations.

Education 

During clinical shifts and conferences, you will be involved in teaching residents and medical students, including the opportunity to coordinate the emergency medicine administrative elective.

You may also attend classes at the American Association of Physician Leadership and the University of Massachusetts Isenberg School of Management.

Risk Management 

Working in conjunction with the risk management department, you will review risk management issues and cases in the emergency department.

Coding and Billing 

Work with the Vice Chair of Operations and the informatics team will give you an understanding of the intricacies of billing and coding in relation to emergency medicine.

Scheduling and Staffing 

You will learn how to schedule physicians for shifts and evaluate staffing models/needs of the emergency department.

Research 

Active participation in research is expected of fellows, including producing a peer reviewed quality research project in an area of interest. You are also encouraged to present research/posters at national conferences.
