Pediatrics Residency Program Director's Message

Dr. Laura Koenigs

Thank you for your interest in the University of Massachusetts Medical School-Baystate (UMMS-Baystate) Pediatrics Residency Program. We are very proud of our residency and our residents. Our balanced, comprehensive program provides a strong foundation for our graduates whether they enter general pediatrics practice or go on to fellowship training.

Our strong emphasis on teamwork reflects the lack of hierarchy within our training program. We are all life-long learners, learning from everyone with whom we work—that is the “Baystate way.” As you progress through residency your competence will increase and your responsibilities will grow. Our  learner-manager-teacher framework supports you with a curriculum tailored to each stage.

While we demand excellence in patient care, we also work hard to maximize your learning and minimize your fatigue and stress. You have a life outside the hospital, and we have supports in place, such as a mindfulness curriculum, to help you through this potentially stressful time in your career. Ask about our wellness strategies for our residents and our faculty when you visit. We take better care of our patients when we take care of ourselves.

Come visit to see why we enjoy working at Baystate Children’s Hospital and living in western Massachusetts.

Sincerely,
Laura M. Pinkston Koenigs, MD
Program Director, Pediatrics Residency
Vice Chair, Education, Department of Pediatrics
