Emergency Ultrasonography Fellowship

The UMass Chan-Baystate Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship provides emergency physicians with all the tools necessary to be an effective emergency ultrasound director. This one-year program is open to board-certified/board-eligible emergency physicians who have completed an Emergency Medicine residency.

Lots of Experience, Top-Flight Facilities, and Educational Focus

We have more than 122,000 emergency visits a year in our busy, high-acuity emergency department and Level-1 trauma center. Our new center has 10 ambulance bays, 3 trauma bays, a rooftop helipad, separate pediatric ED, 94 private rooms, and a dedicated radiology suite.

Our department also offers a residency and a medical student rotation in emergency medicine. We offer fellowships in pediatric emergency medicine, emergency medicine administration, emergency medicine education, emergency medicine research, emergency medical services, emergency wellness, and emergency wilderness medicine.

Expand Your Ultrasound Repertoire

The EUS fellowship stresses mastery of basic ultrasound exams—you will refine and enhance your skills in trauma, abdominal, basic echo, and pelvic sonography. 

You'll also learn sophisticated applications in thoracic, vascular, critical care ultrasound, regional anesthesia, and advanced echocardiography, including the use of them in undifferentiated  hypotension, respiratory distress and cardiac arrest.

Develop Your Education Skills 

We focus heavily on developing your teaching proficiency. You will give frequent lectures to residents, medical students, and faculty during the year, building a large digital teaching database of ultrasound images.

In addition, you'll have the opportunity to travel and lecture nationally and internationally.

Program Resources
  • Image Review: A pc-based server is located centrally in the ED and receives ultrasound exams transmitted from the machines and stores them in a fully searchable PACS database.
  • Ultrasound still images and clips are available for review 24 hours a day. Images are transmitted in real-time as the exams are performed. Image review is via a web-based digital archiving system and is possible from home.
  • Ultrasound machines: 6 GE LogiqE, 2 GE VividIQ, 2 Zonare Z1 Pros.
  • Ultrasound Probes: Wide availability of linear, phased array, curvilinear, and endocavitary probes. We have TEE probes in the emergency department as well.
  • Image Recorder: Wireless digital recording and archiving of all ultrasound exams.
  • Educational Resources: Various vascular and transvaginal pelvic models are available, transesophageal ultrasound probes and simulators, including sim lab access.
Curriculum
  • Number of Clinical Hours: 8 shifts/month
  • The fellow will participate in inter- and intra-departmental quality assurance of ultrasound exams.
  • A research project is required, as are 4 ultrasound scanning shifts per month.
