Critical Care Medicine Research

Research is an important mission of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division at Baystate Medical Center. Critical Care researchers actively participate in multiple clinical trials, including the study of ARDS (The PETAL Network), sepsis, and delirium. Multiple investigators receive NIH support to conduct research.

Critical Care faculty are active clinical researchers with recently published research in outcome assessment, severity scoring, novel therapeutics for shock and ARDS, value-based care, cost analysis, ethics, sedatives, and neuromuscular blocking agents.

Goals for Critical Care fellows participating in research include developing an understanding of how research ideas evolve, the nuances of study design, the importance of developing an informed consent form and subsequently obtaining informed consent, implementing a research protocol, and carrying out the research project in a way that is scientifically rigorous as well as compassionate and humanistic.
