Background and Clinical Focus
About This Provider:
Dr. Miller attended medical school and residency at Georgetown University Medical Center, followed by a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He then completed an additional fellowship in advanced endoscopy at the Center for Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy at the University of Rochester.
Dr. Miller’s clinical interests and expertise include:
- Pancreatic and biliary disorders, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and ERCP procedures
- Esophageal endoscopic therapy for Barrett’s esophagus & esophageal cancer
- Complex interventional endoscopy & surgical endoscopy
- Palliation of GI malignancy including endoscopic stent placement
- Endobariatric procedures: Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty and Transoral Outlet Reduction
- Small bowel disease diagnosis and management: deep enteroscopy/ double-balloon enteroscopy
Before attending medical school, Dr. Miller dedicated a year working as a refugee resettlement caseworker in Syracuse, NY. This unique experience gave him a greater understanding of the values and traditions of diverse populations. No matter what medical challenges his patients are facing, he strives to share treatment and care management decisions with patients and their families. Shared decision-making is the foundation for his advanced procedural practice. As an interventional endoscopist, he functions as a “Cancer Hunter” – spending much of his time helping to diagnose, stage, and treat GI cancers and pre-cancerous GI diseases. He is grateful to be able to serve the western MA community as part of multi-disciplinary team including medical oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists. When not practicing medicine, he turns to family, friends, and food for joy. He loves spending time with his wife and four children, enjoying the activities that Springfield and western Massachusetts provide. He is also an active runner. John believes in table fellowship, frequently gathering with friends and family around a home-cooked meal.
