Today is Match Day—which signals the transition from undergraduate to graduate medical education—and 93 medical school graduates learned that they matched to one of eleven ACGME-accredited residency programs at UMass Chan Medical School - Baystate.

They are among almost 43,000 applicants in the 2023 Main Residency Match—the largest in their 70-year history, according to the National Resident Matching Program's website, with the highest number of applicants and a record 40,375 positions.

PURCH Track Has a 100% Match Rate

All 24 medical students students graduating from UMass Chan - Baystate's Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health (PURCH) track matched to a categorical residency program. 100% of the students in PURCH's three graduating classes have successfully matched to residencies.

Two PURCH graduates will stay at Baystate for their residencies—Joseph Douglass (Emergency Medicine) and Paige Mastalerz (Psychiatry). They will be joined by three graduates from the main campus—two in Obstetrics-Gynecology and one in Family Medicine.

About the Match Process

Match Day, held annually on the third Friday of March, is when graduating medical students learn where they will do their residency training.

During their final year of medical school, students apply to, and interview with, residency programs of their choice. Then applicants and program directors rank each other in order of preference. The National Resident Matching Program uses a computerized mathematical algorithm to match applicants with programs. Applicants receive an envelope with their match results—this year an email as well—which the NRMP mandates cannot be opened before noon.
