Nursing education at Baystate Health

With a history of nursing education dating back over 120 years, Baystate Health is committed to educating and training nurses at many different parts of their careers.

Nurse residency program

Our 10-month paid residency program designed for Registered Nurses with less than 10 months of clinical RN nursing experience. During the program, you will work directly with a unit preceptor and nurse educator for clinical instruction combined with classroom-style seminars and skills/simulation sessions.

Our collaborative learning approach is designed to provide the knowledge base and skill set needed to successfully transition into the role of a professional nurse.

Clinical practicums

We offer comprehensive clinical practicums for bachelor, master, or PhD-level nursing students at affiliated schools of nursing. We have agreements with many academic institutions, please check with your program.

Clinicals take place in a variety of settings across the health care continuum and are:

  • supervised by preceptors (experienced practitioners and educators)
  • foster students’ critical thinking and clinical skills,
  • allow students to put the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom into practice.

Baystate Medical Center is designated a four-time accredited Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence by the ANCC for high-quality nursing care.

History of nursing education

The first record of a training school appears in the minutes of the Medical Staff meeting in 1891. In 1892 Miss Lucinda Howard, a trustee, convinced the Board that Springfield Hospital should have a School of Nursing. In May of that year, nine young women arrived to start a two year course. The Baystate School of Nursing officially closed in 1999.
