New Beginnings

We offer the Baystate New Beginnings Program through the Parent Education Department at Baystate Medical Center.

This free program offers support for what's going on day-to-day with your newborn, as well as what's going on with you, the new parents.

As part of the program, a parent educator checks in with all new families one or two days after birth, while they are still in the hospital. Parents receive the New Beginnings Guide, a calendar resources that describes day-by-day for the first two weeks and then weekly after that what to expect during the first three months of the newborn's life. The guide also addresses how partners and families can help support the new mom during her recovery. The educator also offers to take your baby's footprint to save in the guide.

During this visit, new moms are screened for perinatal mood complications, like postpartum depression and anxiety, which are common complications of childbirth. The educators also do a follow-up phone call with moms a few days later to see if she has any concerns.

The program has its own Facebook page called Baystate's New Beginnings, where parents can find additional support for the first three months. The Baystate Children's Hospital page on Facebook also provides information for parents of children of all ages.

In addition to childbirth and breastfeeding classes, Baystate's Parent Education team offers classes and support groups for new parents after the child is born, including play groups, support for breastfeeding moms, and a second breastfeeding class.
