What Are Neuromuscular Disorders?
Your brain interacts with the world through the peripheral nervous system – your nerves and muscles. It helps you move your arms and legs, and lets you feel the world around you. But if you have a neuromuscular disorder, the signals to and from your brain are impaired.
The symptoms of a neuromuscular disorder can include:
- Difficulty with swallowing or breathing
- Eyelids that droop
- Muscle pain, aches, and cramps
- Numbness or tingling
- Problems with balance

Neurologists and neurosurgeons at Baystate Health treat patients with neuromuscular disorders across western Massachusetts. Our team members have expertise in a wide range of neuromuscular disorders, including:
- Chronic inflammatory demyelinating neuropathy
- Autoimmune nerve disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Motor neuron disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) and spinal muscular atrophy
- Muscle disorders, such as muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy, and other myopathies (diseases of muscle tissue)
- Neuromuscular junction disorders, such as myasthenia gravis, and neuropathies related to other general diseases such as diabetes
We’re partners with the ALS Association. We offer an ALS clinic that combines the expertise of many specialists as part of our treatment planning.
We’re also part of the Northeast Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (NEALS) Consortium. This international research group studies ALS and other motor neuron diseases to learn more about these disorders for the benefit of our patients.
