Becoming pregnant is a complex process with many variables. There are many factors that may contribute to not getting pregnant. Our infertility specialists are skilled in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating reproductive issues.
WHAT CAUSES FEMALE INFERTILITY?
Some of the most common causes of infertility in women include:
- Ovulation dysfunction, a broad term for conditions that cause the eggs to be released from the ovaries irregularly or not at all
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder which happens when a woman’s ovaries or adrenal glands make too many male hormones
- Endometriosis, a problem that causes the lining of the uterus (endometrial tissue) to grow outside of the uterus
- Tubal disease, which occurs when your fallopian tubes are damaged or blocked
- Pelvic adhesive disease, which occurs when scarring in your pelvis causes organs to stick together
- Turner Syndrome, a genetic condition that causes ovarian failure
Cancer and common cancer treatments—chemotherapy and radiation—can also affect female infertility.
WHAT CAUSES MALE INFERTILITY?
For men, there are two primary causes of infertility:
-
Low quality or quantity of sperm, due to genetic disease, health issues like diabetes or certain infections, environmental factors like frequent exposure to heat, or enlarged veins in the testes (varicocele)
- Ejaculation problems, due to damage to the reproductive organs, such as a blockage, or genetic diseases
Male fertility can also be influenced by smoking, excessive drinking, exposure to heavy metals, infections, marijuana, chemotherapy, and radiation.
