Directed Blood Donations

As a patient of Baystate Health, individuals who expect to receive blood transfusions may select their own donors.

The risk of transfusion-related disease transmission is very low. There is no evidence that blood from directed donors is safer than blood from community blood supply which is provided by volunteers.

Directed blood donations may only be made in the Baystate Health Blood Donor Center. Pre-testing donors to determine blood type is not available. 

Women of childbearing age should not receive blood from their husbands or male partners. Potential organ or bone marrow donors should not donate blood to a person who may receive their organs.

Patients and their families may request information regarding the number of units of blood available. All other information must remain confidential.

How to Arrange a directed donation

  1. Discuss the possibility of a directed donation with your physician and obtain a note outlining how much blood will be needed for the transfusion.
  2. Get a “Request for Directed Donation” form from the Blood Donor center by calling (413)794-4600.
  3. Complete the “Request for Directed Donation” form and return to the Blood Donor Center before or at the time of the donation. The form will be kept on file for 30 days from the expected date of use or for 60 days for patients with ongoing transfusion needs.
  4. Tell each donor to call us at (413)794-4600 for more information or to schedule an appointment. All directed donations should be made at least five to seven days before the planned transfusion.

Blood from a directed donor will not be available if:

  • The blood type is not compatible
  • The blood bag becomes broken, contaminated, or unusable
  • Testing is incomplete or abnormal
  • A disaster or another patient’s life-threatening need requires use of the blood
