Adult Psychiatric Treatment Unit

Baystate Medical Center provides inpatient treatment for patients ages 18 and older with psychiatric disorders in a safe, secure setting. Short-term specialized treatment is provided by a multidisciplinary team, using a problem-oriented approach tailored to the needs of the individual.

Our multidisciplinary treatment team consists of a psychiatrist, a Physician Assistant, psychiatric nurses, psychiatric social workers and master's prepared specialists, occupational and recreational therapists and unit counselors. In addition to individual, group and family therapy, a full range of biological treatments are available, including pharmacotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy.

Other resources include on-site neuropsychological testing and advanced diagnostic evaluation. Medical, neurological and other consultations are available as indicated. The facilities are licensed to accommodate both voluntary and involuntary patients. Psychiatric coverage is available seven days a week, and emergency admissions are accepted 24 hours a day.

Treatment planning meetings occur at least five times a week. The staff of the Adult Inpatient Service works closely with referring clinicians through frequent communication and invitations to participate in planning meetings. The family of the patient is encouraged to be involved in the assessment and treatment process. Specialized treatment offered by the Service includes geriatric psychiatry, eating disorders, protocols, ECT and behaviorally-focused care plans.
