August 16, 2017
Thoracic Surgery

Massachusetts has more than 100 hospitals and Baystate Medical Center was named third best in the state—just behind Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital—by U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings released in August 2017.

To create their Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, U.S. News & World Report analyzed data from more than 4,500 general medical and surgical hospitals across the U.S. on their performance in adult and pediatric specialties, and common procedures and conditions. They scored hospitals on a variety of clinical outcomes and care-related measures, such as patient survival, readmissions, patient experience, and nurse staffing.

Top 10% in Four Medical Specialties

In gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, nephrology, and pulmonary medicine, Baystate Medical Center was ranked a high performer—meaning it was in the top 10 percent of all hospitals studied.

U.S. News evaluated hospitals on 16 adult medical specialties, focusing on patients with the most complex cases. The top hospitals are nationally ranked from one to fifty. Hospitals that nearly made the top 50 may be recognized as high performing.

Baystate was not evaluated in the ten pediatric specialties that were analyzed.

Highest Rating in All Common Procedures

Baystate Medical Center was one of only 48 hospitals in the country to achieve the highest possible rating in all nine common adult inpatient procedures or conditions.

It was rated a high performer in aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, coronary bypass surgery, heart failure, total hip replacement, total knee replacement, and lung cancer surgery.

U.S. News assigned each hospital a rating of high performing, average or below average in each of the nine common adult procedures and conditions. To be a high performer, a hospital has to be significantly better than the national average.
