Retirement is one of life’s sentinel crossroads – a moment
when one finds oneself looking both backward and forward.
What have I achieved?
What gives my life meaning?
What will my legacy be?
For Bernadette and Jan Piepul, post-retirement estate
planning led to a generous, lasting gift to provide future
support for Baystate Children’s Hospital.
Lifelong Springfield residents, the Piepuls have always had
a special connection with Baystate Health and a desire to
help children – the youngest, most vulnerable members
of our community.
Jan grew up near Baystate Medical Center and enjoyed
getting to know many Baystate care providers who came
to his family business, Piepul’s Camera Center. Bernadette
recently retired from a distinguished 36-year career in
surgical nursing – a long and fulfilling adventure that
took her from the operating room to post-operative care to
management of General Surgery at Baystate Medical Center.
By including a gift to Baystate Children’s Hospital in
their estate plan, the Piepuls are providing crucial future
resources to improve children’s health and well-being.
Supporting a shared mission
Bernadette and Jan have been making charitable contributions
in support of patient care at Baystate Health for more than
25 years. A few years ago, they joined other members of
our community in making our Children’s Specialty
Center possible – a facility for outpatient specialty care.
By including Baystate Children’s Hospital in their will, the
Piepuls have now planned their largest and most lasting gift.
Leaving a legacy at Baystate Children’s Hospital was a natural
decision for the Piepuls. They share a profound sense of
personal and professional mission with the healthcare
professionals there, as well as deep compassion for the
children who are struggling with health challenges.
“You see the impact of philanthropy everywhere at
Baystate Children’s Hospital – from life-saving equipment
to the clinical and Child Life services provided throughout
the hospital,” says Bernadette. “You feel the commitment
of the nurses and other staff members. They love their
jobs and they love their patients. We love the idea of
supporting all that they do with an estate gift.”
Spirit of caring
Through their bequest, Bernadette and Jan Piepul will
ensure that the vital work of Baystate Children’s Hospital
will be sustained at the highest level for years to come.
And they will help advance innovations beyond imagining
for young patients and their families.
“We’re so happy that our estate will be helping the children
of our community long after we’re gone, in ways that
we can’t even begin to envision today,” says Jan. “New,
life-saving technologies will transform the care provided
by a new generation of healthcare professionals. And we’ll
be part of it through our legacy.”
“The care you receive at Baystate is the best care you can
receive anywhere,” says Bernadette. “I was proud to devote
my nursing career to Baystate Health’s patients, and we are
proud to sustain that care through our bequest.” Bernadette and Jan’s generosity epitomizes the spirit of
community at Baystate Health, says Mark Keroack, MD,
president and CEO.
“Healthcare is more than a career, it’s a calling,” says
Keroack. “We are grateful that some of the nation’s finest
healthcare professionals – nurses like Bernadette Piepul
and men and women in an array of other professions –
choose to dedicate their lives to our patients. We’re
grateful to their families, as well – people like Jan Piepul
– who make this all-encompassing life commitment along
with their loved ones. To punctuate decades of service
with an enduring legacy gift, as the Piepuls have done,
is a powerful act of generosity.”
