On Friday, August 12, Baystate Health leaders, team members, community friends, parents and families came together to recognize the 2016 Baystate Springfield Educational Partnership (BSEP) scholarship recipients.
The event included words of acknowledgement from Baystate senior leaders and the presentation of scholarship checks. The highlight of the program included inspiring remarks from scholarship recipients, Emanuel Parrilla and Dennies Jones, who shared their personal experiences with BSEP and the impact the scholarships will have on their education.
FUTURE HEALTH CARE WORKERS
For many of the students in BSEP, the financial barrier of obtaining higher education poses a significant challenge. BSEP works to support students with overcoming this challenge by providing scholarship funds to assist with paying for their education. Over the past eight years, Baystate annually awards an average of $75,000 in scholarships for up to twenty students who complete the BSEP program and are enrolled in a health science major at a post-secondary institution.
The BSEP scholarships address many areas of importance for Baystate and our community, including racial and ethnic disparities in the composition of Springfield’s health care workforce. By providing low income Springfield public school graduates the opportunity to attend college and to become employed in under-represented clinical health care professions here at Baystate Health; Baystate is continually increasing our workforce through the retainment of Springfield natives in our community.
BSEP is an integral part of Baystate’s effort to “grow our own” by supporting Springfield youth that are pursuing careers in health care. To date BSEP has reached over 550 students and over 275 BSEP internship and work opportunities have led to over 95 permanent employment opportunities for BSEP alumni.
BSEP employs an operating principle of continuous engagement with the students. The result of this engagement is a growing skill base among these students and a strong connection to Baystate. Baystate has not been able to achieve the type of engagement with these students without exemplary involvement by highly professional individual team members and various departments who demonstrate their valued roles as teachers and mentors to our future, and sometimes distant future, workforce. Departments that have played key roles in developing our BSEP students, include: numerous nursing units, Baystate reference labs, operating rooms, departments of medicine, social work, rehab, support services, physician assistants, and other areas as student interest dictates.
To the 2016 BSEP scholarship recipients, we applaud you and wish you luck in your educational and professional journeys
