Baystate Health patients, guests and team members are now enjoying locally sourced, certified fair trade coffee. Greenfield-based Pierce Bros Coffee Roasters coffee is now available at many Baystate facilities.
“Just as we’re committed to providing care close to home for our patients, we’re buying more and more of our products from local suppliers, too,” said Matt Perpetua, manager of Supply Chain & Commissary Operations for Baystate Medical Center’s Food and Nutrition Services. “Pierce Brothers makes great coffee and they’re based right here in our western Massachusetts community. That supports a healthy local economy.”
“It is amazing to have signed our first client in health care, but to be associated with Baystate Health, one of the largest health care operations in western Massachusetts, is a big deal,” said Sean Pierce, co-owner of Pierce Bros Coffee. “It really shows their commitment to supporting locally-owned businesses and the community.”
Baystate Health is sourcing more of its food products locally than ever before.
At peak harvest times throughout the year, Baystate purchases as much as 30 percent of its produce from local farms such as Czajkowski Farm in Hadley and others sourced through a local produce distributor. In addition to produce, approximately 20 percent of Baystate’s milk is also sourced directly from western Massachusetts dairy farms, including Mapleline Farm in Hadley and Our Family Farms in Greenfield, a cooperative of area dairy farmers.
How the Pierce Bros got started
In 1997, brothers Sean and Darren Pierce opened the door to their first cafe in Sunderland, Mass. Then in 2005, they moved their 1/4 bag air roaster and all of their wholesale operations to a warehouse in Greenfield. In 2006, the brothers decided to give up their café in Sunderland, so they could focus solely on wholesale operations. Since that time, they have acquired many new distributors.
“It’s truly a family run business. Everyone has their own little forte in the growth of Pierce Bros Gourmet Distributors from dad delivering coffee to Sean's wife working the payroll and even our older sister distributing the coffee in the gift baskets she sells,” said Darren Pierce, co-owner of Pierce Bros Coffee.
Six years and two retail coffee cafes later, Pierce Bros Coffee Roasters - on the cutting edge with new and exciting ideas for the interested coffee consumer - have established themselves as a competitive coffee company in both the retail and wholesale coffee world.
