Breast Oncology Fellowship Curriculum

Curriculum Summary

Breast surgical oncology is an ever-evolving field that goes beyond surgery alone. We provide a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to breast disease education that supports a balanced exposure to all aspects of breast care and encompasses the broad spectrum of breast disease—malignant breast disease, benign breast disease, high risk and gene mutation carriers, and wound care.

Rotations

Breast Surgery: 30 weeks

Multidisciplinary experience:

  • Plastic/Reconstructive Surgery (4 weeks)
  • Medical Oncology & Genetics (4 weeks)
  • Radiation Oncology (4 weeks)
  • Radiology (4 weeks)
  • Psycho-oncology/Outreach/Social work/Rehabilitation (4 weeks)
  • Pathology (2 weeks)

In addition:

  • Education in leadership, administration, and wellness.
  • Research support with dedicated research time.

Didactic Education 

  • BESAP (American Society of Breast Surgeons’ web-based CME learning tool for physicians who treat breast disease)
  • Journal club
  • Q&A sessions
  • Leadership education materials

Apprenticeship Model

  • Monthly schedules will be created for broad exposure to the individual surgeons’ clinics and surgeries
  • Fellow’s clinic: 2-3 sessions per month
  • Continuity of care (3 patients) to follow through the cancer evaluation and treatment process
  • Educational opportunities:
    • Overseeing the junior residents and medical students while on service
    • Monthly service rounds
    • Outreach activities
