ME-4137 Pulmonary Diseases Elective

This elective is an introduction to the clinical discipline of pulmonology.


The student will...

  • prepare the initial consultation evaluation for review with the attending physician.
  • To participate in most activities of the Pulmonary Division, including inpatient consultation, conferences, and core curriculum discussion sessions.
  • attend all consultation rounds on inpatients and separate consultation sessions with faculty for ambulatory patients.
  • attend weekly combined medical pathological chest conference designed to emphasize interdisciplinary discussion of pulmonary problems.
  • receive instruction in x-ray interpretation, special procedures in radiology, and interpretation of pulmonary function tests.
  • assist in management of ICU patients with associated blood gas and ventilation problems, including all issues with controlled ventilation.
  • gain exposure to the Pulmonary Laboratory which provides complete clinical pulmonary function evaluation, including exercise studies.
  • have exposure to the Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy Unit.

Note: Most patients in the region with suspected tuberculosis are evaluated at Baystate Medical Center for initial diagnosis, evaluation and treatment.  A weekly outpatient clinic is held for follow-up of active tuberculosis treatment and evaluation of latent tuberculosis.  Pulmonary Clinic is held twice each month caring for patients with a wide variety of pulmonary problems.
