ME-450 Ambulatory Care Elective

Location: Baystate High Street Health Center, 140 High Street, Springfield, MA


This elective provides the student with clinical exposure to a wide variety of medical experiences relevant to the practice of general internal medicine in the ambulatory and subspecialty settings.  This includes clinics in Dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, women's health, geriatrics, nephrology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pulmonology, rheumatology, tuberculosis, and urgent care.


The student will...

  • attend daily conferences on common diseases in primary care and medical subspecialties.
  • work closely with residents and faculty assigned to the health center.
  • contribute to daily EBM ambulatory morning report conferences
  • gain a foundation for the principles of primary care including clinical epidemiology, periodic health examinations, screening for disease, psychosocial aspects of health and illness, nutrition and medicine.
  • participate in in-depth discussions of common ambulatory problems.
  • assume responsibility for clinical decision making at a level appropriate to his/her experience.
